Te mapa
Fianarantsoa lies in Madagascar's southern highlands, in the region of Upper Matsiatra. From above, the terrain shapes the city. An old upper town occupies a ridge, with winding streets that follow the contours. Below it, the newer districts spread across lower slopes and valley floors, where rice paddies still push in between neighbourhoods.
The city was founded in the early nineteenth century as a regional seat of the Merina kingdom. Its name is often translated as a place of good learning, and it remains an educational and religious centre for the south. The surrounding hills are known for tea plantations and vineyards, rare in Madagascar.
A railway runs east from the city down the escarpment to Manakara on the coast, one of the island's best-known train journeys. A Fianarantsoa map poster shows the hilltop core, the looping roads and the terraced valleys that give the city its layered character.
The historic quarter on the hilltop has narrow, curving streets and old churches. On the map it forms a dense knot above the rest of the city.
Paddy fields fill the lower ground between neighbourhoods and create fine, stepped patterns that blend city and countryside.
The line toward Manakara leaves the city to the east and heads for the escarpment, drawing a long thread across the edge of the map.

Koteā ko Fianarantsoa
Travellers who took the train to the coast, and Malagasy families from the highlands, may want a record of this hilly city. Its winding streets make a particularly graphic print.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a trip date or a family name. Then choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
