Te mapa
Annaka lies in western Gunma, where the Kantō Plain narrows and meets the mountains. The Usui River runs through the city from west to east, and the main settlements sit along it on river terraces. The map shows long strings of streets following the valley, with steep, forested ground rising on both sides as you move west.
The western end of the city climbs toward the Usui Pass, one of the historic routes between the Kantō region and Nagano. The old rack railway over the pass is now preserved as a heritage park in Yokokawa, and a brick arch bridge from that line still stands in the hills. The Hokuriku Shinkansen now passes through Annaka on its way to Nagano.
Isobe Onsen, a hot spring town within Annaka, is often cited as the origin of the ♨ symbol used on Japanese maps to mark hot springs. That makes Annaka a fitting place to hang on a wall as a map. An Annaka map poster traces the river, the railway lines and the terraced streets as they rise into the hills.
The river runs east through the city and sets the direction of most of the built-up areas, which follow its terraces through the valley.
Railways climb west toward the pass, with the preserved old line at Yokokawa and the Shinkansen crossing the landscape on its way to Nagano.
The hot spring district sits beside the river and is traditionally linked to the origin of the familiar hot spring map symbol.
