Ānwén is the seat of Pan'an County in central Zhejiang, deep in a mountainous part of the province. The terrain here leaves little flat ground, so the town has grown along a river valley, and its shape on the map is long and constrained, with slopes rising close on both sides.
Within the valley, streets run parallel to the river and are joined by bridges and short cross streets. Where the valley widens, the grid becomes denser and more regular, and newer districts occupy whatever level land is available. Beyond the edges, roads follow side valleys into the hills, which are largely covered in forest and farmland.
