Te mapa
Aomori sits at the northern tip of Honshu, on the southern shore of Mutsu Bay. The coastline sweeps in a gentle arc across the top of the map, and the city spreads south from it in a fairly regular grid toward the foothills of the Hakkōda Mountains. The waterfront is the most recognisable edge of the city, with the triangular ASPAM building and a former Seikan ferry ship moored as a museum.
For much of the twentieth century, Aomori was the terminus of the ferry link to Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait, until the Seikan Tunnel opened in 1988. It is one of the snowiest cities in Japan, and it is known for the Nebuta Festival each August, when huge illuminated floats are paraded through the streets. The surrounding prefecture is famous across Japan for its apples.
An Aomori map poster captures a city framed by sea and mountains. In black and white, Mutsu Bay becomes a broad pale field along the top, the grid of streets forms a steady, even texture, and the rivers flowing down from the hills add soft curves. The result is a restrained, graphic map that matches the clean lines of a northern port.
The bay curves along the northern edge of the city, a smooth coastline that gives the map a strong horizontal boundary and a wide expanse of open water.
Near the port, the triangular ASPAM tower and the former Seikan ferry ship, now a museum, mark the edge where the city grid meets the harbour.
South of the waterfront, the streets spread in a regular grid that gradually loosens as the ground rises toward the foothills of the Hakkōda range.

Koteā ko Aomori
Aomori tends to leave a strong impression: the snow, the harbour, the drums and floats of Nebuta in summer. For those who grew up here or passed through on the way north, a map of the bay and the streets brings those seasons back in a single glance.
