Te mapa
Morioka, the capital of Iwate Prefecture in northern Honshu, grew up around the confluence of the Kitakami, Nakatsu and Shizukuishi rivers. The old castle site, now Iwate Park, sits on a rise beside the water. The streets of the former castle town curve around it, with bridges crossing the Nakatsu at short intervals, and newer districts spread along the valley floor to the north and south.
The city is framed by mountains, above all the volcanic cone of Mount Iwate to the northwest, which can be seen from the riverbanks on clear days. Morioka is known for its local noodles, including wanko soba, served in a long succession of small bowls, and for the Ishiwari-zakura, a cherry tree growing out of a split granite boulder in front of the district court.
A Morioka map poster is defined by its rivers. The city follows the water rather than a grid, so the composition is full of soft angles and long curves, and the central quarter grows denser where the rivers join. It suits the restrained Paper and Noir styles especially well.
The Kitakami, Nakatsu and Shizukuishi meet close to the city centre, creating a branching pattern of water that shapes every neighbourhood around it.
The stone walls of Morioka Castle survive in Iwate Park, which forms a compact green shape at the heart of the map beside the river.
The small Nakatsu River runs through the old town, crossed by a series of bridges that give the centre a fine, ladder-like rhythm on paper.

Koteā ko Morioka
Morioka appeals to people who prefer a slower pace, with rivers, stone walls and mountains close at hand. A map of the city suits anyone who studied or lived here, or who found it on a trip through Tohoku and wants to remember its shape.
