Te mapa
Ishinomaki lies on the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture, where the old course of the Kitakami River meets Ishinomaki Bay. For centuries it was a shipping hub, sending rice from the interior to Edo by sea, and it later became one of the main fishing ports of north-eastern Japan. On the map, the river divides the city and the harbour and coastline run along its southern edge.
The city was among the places worst hit by the tsunami of March 2011. Large parts of the low-lying coast were rebuilt afterwards, with new sea walls, memorial parks and raised roads. Hiyoriyama, a small hill near the river mouth, rises above the centre and gives the clearest view of how the town, the river and the sea fit together.
An Ishinomaki map poster shows a city shaped by water on two sides: the river curving through the middle, crossed by bridges, and the long shoreline beyond. The city also honours the manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori with a museum on Nakaze, an island in the river. It is a small detail, but a characteristic one.
The old Kitakami River curves through the centre to the bay, splitting the city in two. It is the map's strongest natural line and is crossed by several bridges.
A small wooded hill near the river mouth rises above the streets around it. On the map it appears as a green island inside the dense street pattern.
Fishing wharves, breakwaters and a long stretch of rebuilt coastline run along the southern edge, where the streets meet the open water of Ishinomaki Bay.

Koteā ko Ishinomaki
For many people Ishinomaki is a place of return and remembrance: a family home near the harbour, a neighbourhood rebuilt after 2011, streets that have changed but still feel familiar. A map holds all of that without needing words.
