Te mapa
Kōriyama lies in a wide basin in central Fukushima Prefecture, a crossroads where the Tōhoku Shinkansen and several regional lines meet. On a map the station area forms a dense, gridded core, while residential districts spread across flat farmland toward the hills. The Abukuma River runs north along the eastern side of the city, a steady curving line through the urban edge.
The city's growth is tied to water. In the Meiji era the Asaka Canal was dug to carry water from Lake Inawashiro across the mountains to this dry plateau, turning it into productive rice land and allowing the town to expand. Traces of the canal network still thread through the outskirts as thin lines between fields and suburbs.
A Kōriyama map poster shows the balance between the compact station quarter, the expressway interchanges and the looser pattern of farm roads beyond. Kōriyama is also known in Japan for its choirs and school music programmes, and it often calls itself a city of music, a small cultural detail behind a very practical-looking plan.
The area around Kōriyama Station is the densest part of the map, a tight grid where the Shinkansen and local lines converge.
Irrigation channels fed from Lake Inawashiro run through the western and southern districts, fine lines that recall how the plateau was opened to farming.
The river runs north past the eastern districts, giving the city a long natural boundary and a gentle curve across the frame.

Koteā ko Kōriyama
Kōriyama is a place people pass through on the Shinkansen and a place people call home for decades. A map of it suits both: a reminder of a school, a first apartment or a family house in the basin.
