Te mapa
Utsunomiya is the capital of Tochigi Prefecture, sitting at the northern edge of the Kanto plain where it starts to rise toward the mountains around Nikko. From above, the centre is a dense grid of small streets around the old castle site and Futarayama Shrine, with the Tagawa river winding through the middle of town on a roughly north–south line.
The Tohoku Shinkansen and the conventional railway cut a straight line through the eastern side of the centre, and newer districts spread out from the station. In 2023 the city opened a new light rail line running east toward the industrial parks and the Kinugawa river, one of the first all-new tram systems in Japan in decades.
A Utsunomiya map poster also picks up the rougher terrain to the northwest, where the Oya district has been quarried for its soft volcanic stone for centuries. The city is known across Japan for gyoza, but on paper it is the contrast that stands out: a fine urban grid on flat ground giving way to wooded ridges and scattered villages.
The former castle grounds near the centre have partly reconstructed earthwork walls and moats, visible as a compact green shape inside the tight grid of downtown streets.
A narrow river that curves through the centre from north to south, followed by footpaths and crossed by many small bridges. It gives the dense core a soft, natural line.
To the northwest, the land breaks into low hills and quarry valleys where Oya stone has been cut for building. Roads narrow and bend as the city gives way to countryside.

Koteā ko Utsunomiya
Utsunomiya is often seen as a stop on the way to Nikko, but people who live or study here know it as a real city with its own layout. A map poster is a quiet way to remember a first apartment, a university year or a hometown.
Add your own title, a line with a date or neighbourhood, and the coordinates, then choose a style. Classic black & white and Paper bring out the fine street grid, and Noir makes the river and rail lines stand out against a dark background.
