Te mapa
Chikusei lies in western Ibaraki, on the flat Kanto plain north of Tokyo. It was formed in 2005 by merging Shimodate with neighbouring towns, so it contains several centres rather than one. From above, the landscape is mostly fields, with the Kinu and Kokai rivers running north to south and small settlements scattered between them.
Shimodate remains the main urban area, where railway lines cross, including the Mooka Line on which the SL Moka steam train has run. To the south, Mount Tsukuba rises above the plain, a familiar sight on clear days. The city is also known for its pear and rice growing.
A Chikusei map poster shows a rural Japanese city in fine detail: rivers drawing long parallel lines, rice-field grids filling the spaces between, and tight clusters of streets around stations and old town centres. It is a quiet, orderly composition that reflects the agricultural rhythm of northern Kanto.
The Kinu and Kokai rivers run through the city from north to south, forming two strong lines across the flat plain.
The main urban cluster gathers around the railway station, where several lines meet and the street grid becomes dense.
Rice paddies and orchards create regular rectangular divisions between settlements, giving the wider map a calm geometric texture.
