Te mapa
Noda occupies the northwestern tip of Chiba Prefecture, and its shape on the map is unusual. The city runs north to south between two major rivers: the Edo River along its western side and the Tone River to the north and east. The Tone Canal, dug in the late nineteenth century, crosses the land between them.
Noda has been a centre for soy sauce brewing since the Edo period, when boats carried barrels down the river to the capital. Kikkoman, which grew out of the local brewing families, still has its headquarters here, and the smell of fermentation is part of the town's identity.
A Noda map poster emphasises the water that has shaped the city's economy. The two rivers with their wide levees and floodplains frame the streets like brackets, the canal cuts a straight line between them, and the town fills the ground in between. In monochrome, the riverbanks form clean, strong edges.
The Edo River runs along the western border of the city. Its wide riverbed and levees form a long band on the map that separates Noda from Saitama.
A Meiji-era canal links the Tone and Edo rivers across the north of the city. Its straight line stands out among the curves of the natural waterways.
Close to the Edo River, the old centre grew around the soy sauce breweries, and it still has a compact street pattern at the heart of the city.

Koteā ko Noda
Noda suits anyone with a link to the town, from families rooted here to people who know it through its breweries. The rivers on either side give the map a clear frame that works well on a wall.
