Aral Map Poster & Print

Aral, in Kyzylorda Region of Kazakhstan, was once a busy fishing port on the northern shore of the Aral Sea. As the rivers feeding the sea were diverted for irrigation during the Soviet period, the water retreated, and the shoreline moved many kilometres away from the town. The old harbour area now faces dry, flat ground.

From above, Aral is a compact grid of streets on the steppe, crossed by the railway linking Central Asia with Russia. The former seabed to the south and west is visible as pale, empty land. Since the Kokaral Dam was completed in the 2000s, the North Aral Sea has partly recovered, and the water has moved back closer to the town.

An Aral map poster tells one of the best-known environmental stories of the twentieth century through geography alone. Streets, railway and an old waterfront are set against the open space where the sea used to be.

01

Former harbour

The old port area still sits on the town's edge. On the map, it faces dry ground rather than water, a direct trace of the sea's retreat.

02

Railway line

The main rail line crosses Aral from north to south and ties the town to Kazakhstan's long rail network. It forms the strongest straight line on the poster.

03

Old seabed

The flat land beyond the town was once under the Aral Sea. On the poster, it appears as a wide empty field, a reminder of what used to be there.
