Te mapa
Arandas sits in Los Altos de Jalisco, the high plateau east of Guadalajara, at roughly two thousand metres. From above, its centre follows the classic Mexican grid. Straight streets meet at right angles around a main plaza and its church, and the block pattern stretches out evenly in every direction. It is one of the clearest layouts a small city can offer on paper.
The town is closely tied to tequila. The red soils of the surrounding highlands are planted with blue agave, and several well-known highland tequila houses are based in and around Arandas. Beyond the grid, the map loosens into rural roads and field boundaries, and the change from town to agave country happens quickly.
Arandas is also known for its tall, unfinished neo-Gothic church and a huge bell displayed at ground level nearby, a local landmark. An Arandas map poster captures the order of the colonial plan: a town that grew outward from one plaza, block by block, on a high and open plateau.
Straight streets at right angles give the centre a measured, almost graphic quality. It prints with unusual clarity, even at the smaller sizes.
The main square and the church block anchor the grid. They form a small open space that the whole street pattern organises itself around.
Past the edge of town, the map opens into country roads and field lines. This is the agave-growing plateau that gives highland tequila its name.
