Te mapa
Araraquara lies in the interior of São Paulo state, on gently rolling land given over to citrus and sugarcane. Its centre is a clear example of the checkerboard plan common to towns in the region, with even blocks, straight streets and small squares repeated across the core. Newer neighbourhoods extend outward in looser layouts, bounded by highways and farmland.
Locals call it the Morada do Sol, the home of the sun, a nickname that reflects its warm climate. The city is also a centre of the orange juice industry, and processing plants and plantations shape the land around it. A campus of São Paulo State University adds a large block of open grounds to the city's layout.
In literature, Araraquara is remembered as the place where Mário de Andrade wrote the first version of Macunaíma in 1926, while staying at a farm outside the city. An Araraquara map poster shows the order of that grid clearly: the tight centre, the ring of later districts and the roads that lead out into the countryside.
Regular square blocks and straight streets define the historic core. The grid is so consistent that the eye can follow a single avenue from one side of town to the other.
The UNESP campus appears as a broad open area among the streets, with its own internal paths and buildings set in green space.
At the city limits the grid stops abruptly against highways and farmland, where citrus groves and cane fields take over the landscape.
