Te mapa
Rio Claro, in the interior of São Paulo state, is laid out on one of the most regular grids in Brazil. In the centre, streets and avenues are numbered rather than named, and they cross at right angles to form a chequerboard of square blocks. On a map the pattern is immediately recognisable, running outward until it meets newer neighbourhoods and open land.
The city grew with coffee and the railway in the nineteenth century, and the Companhia Paulista railway company built workshops here. On the edge of the city lies the Edmundo Navarro de Andrade State Forest. This large eucalyptus forest was planted in the early twentieth century to supply the railway with wood and is now a protected green space.
Rio Claro is also home to a campus of São Paulo State University, known for its geosciences and biology programmes. A Rio Claro map poster shows the strict geometry of the centre, the highways curving around it and the textured mass of the forest. Together they make a clear portrait of an inland city built to a plan.
In the centre, numbered streets and avenues cross at right angles, making a chequerboard pattern that reads cleanly at any print size.
The state forest planted to supply the railway appears as a large textured area beside the city, one of the most distinctive features from above.
The campus of São Paulo State University forms its own cluster of buildings and green space within the wider city plan.
