Campinas lies about a hundred kilometres northwest of the city of São Paulo, on the rolling plateau of the state's interior. It grew in the nineteenth century on the wealth of sugar and then coffee, and the old centre still keeps a compact grid around the cathedral. Beyond it the city spreads over gentle hills, cut by highways heading in every direction.
Two of Brazil's most important motorways, the Anhanguera and the Bandeirantes, pass through the metropolitan area, and Viracopos International Airport lies to the southwest. The University of Campinas, known as Unicamp, occupies a large campus in the Barão Geraldo district to the north, and the city is a major centre for technology and research. The composer Carlos Gomes was born here.

Lagoa do Taquaral
The lake at the centre of Parque Portugal forms a green oval northeast of downtown, a favourite place for walks and one of the city's clearest landmarks from above.
Highway corridors
The Anhanguera and Bandeirantes motorways sweep across the metropolitan area in long curves, linking Campinas with São Paulo and giving the map strong directional lines.
