Te mapa
Arauca is the capital of the Colombian department of the same name. It sits on the southern bank of the Arauca River, which marks the border with Venezuela here. From above, the town is a tight grid of blocks pressed against the curving river, while the land beyond stretches flat in every direction as part of the vast tropical grasslands known as the llanos.
The river is the defining line of any Arauca map poster. It bends along the northern edge of the town, with sandbars and old channels visible in the floodplain. An international bridge crosses to the Venezuelan town of El Amparo, a short link that ties the two banks together through trade and family connections.
Around the centre, streets follow a regular pattern of squares and straight blocks, while newer districts extend toward the airport and the roads leading into the plains. The region is cattle country and has become known for oil production. On paper, though, the town's character comes from the meeting of grid, river and open horizon.
The river curves along the town's northern edge and forms the international boundary. Its shifting banks and sandbars draw soft, irregular lines against the straight streets.
A single international bridge spans the water toward El Amparo. Within the frame, it is a small but meaningful stroke connecting two countries.
Beyond the last blocks the land opens into flat grassland. The edges of the map stay light and spare, which shows how compact the town really is.

Koteā ko Arauca
For someone from Arauca or the eastern plains of Colombia, this map holds a sense of place that is hard to put into words: the river at the end of the street, the border just across it, the openness of the llanos.
