Te mapa
Areia sits in the Brejo region of Paraíba, an elevated, cooler and wetter area in northeastern Brazil. From above, the town follows the shape of its hilltop, with streets curving along the ridge and dropping down the slopes. Around it the map turns into valleys, sugarcane fields and patches of Atlantic forest.
The historic centre, with its colonial houses and churches, is protected as national heritage. Areia is home to the Teatro Minerva, one of the oldest theatres in Brazil, and it was the birthplace of the painter Pedro Américo. The surrounding engenhos are known for cachaça and rapadura.
An Areia map poster is shaped by the terrain. Instead of a grid, the streets follow ridges and valleys in irregular lines, and the edges of town dissolve into winding rural roads. The result is organic and slightly unexpected, a good record of a hill town in the northeastern interior.
The historic centre sits along the high ground, with streets following the ridge. Churches and colonial buildings cluster here, in the densest part of the map.
Streets bend and drop down the hillsides toward the valleys. Their curves give the map a flowing, irregular character.
Beyond the town, rural roads lead to sugarcane mills and small farms. They make a light, branching network across the green Brejo landscape.
