Te mapa
Arita is a small town in Saga Prefecture on Kyushu, set in a narrow valley between forested hills. From above, the settlement stretches out along the valley floor instead of spreading in all directions. A main street and a rail line run the length of the town, and side streets climb a short way into the hills on either side.
Arita is the home of Japanese porcelain. In the early seventeenth century, porcelain stone was found at Izumiyama, and the kilns that followed produced the ware shipped abroad from the nearby port of Imari. The town's large ceramics fair draws many visitors each spring. On the map, the old kiln and merchant districts line the valley along the main road.
An Arita map poster captures this long, narrow shape. The streets form a slender band that follows the valley, and the surrounding hills are left open, giving the composition a strong linear rhythm. For anyone who loves ceramics, it is a map of the place where the story of Japanese porcelain began.
The historic main road runs the length of the valley, lined by old kiln and merchant districts. It forms the spine of the map.
The porcelain stone quarry at Izumiyama is where Arita's ceramic history began. It lies at the upper end of the town's valley setting.
Forested slopes rise on both sides of the valley. Printed as open space, they narrow the town into a long, elegant strip.
