Arnsberg lies in the Sauerland of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the Ruhr winds through wooded hills. The historic town sits on a ridge almost enclosed by a tight river bend, with the ruins of a castle at its highest point. From above, that loop of water around the old streets is the most distinctive shape on the map, and one of the clearest river bends in the region.
The modern city is spread out along the valleys. Neheim, the largest district, lies downstream near the confluence of the Ruhr and the Möhne, and other districts sit in side valleys between hills. Arnsberg was long the seat of counts and later an administrative centre for the region, a role it still holds today. Large forests surround the city, including the Arnsberg Forest to the north.
