Arrecifes lies in the north of Buenos Aires Province, on the flat, open land of the pampas. The town takes its name from the Arrecifes River, which runs along one side of the urban area. From above, the town is a textbook Argentine grid: square blocks laid out evenly around a central plaza, cut on one side by the winding course of the river.
The surrounding land is some of the most productive farmland in the country, and Arrecifes has long served as a service town for the region's farms. On the map, rural roads leave the grid at straight angles and run across the countryside, dividing it into large rectangular fields that continue to the horizon.
