Te mapa
Assab lies on the Red Sea coast of southern Eritrea, not far from the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. The map is defined by the meeting of land and water. A curved bay holds the port, and the town's streets spread inland across flat, arid ground, with small islands scattered offshore. Beyond the built-up area there is almost nothing but desert plain.
The bay played a role in modern colonial history. In 1869 an Italian shipping company bought land here, and Assab became Italy's first foothold in the Horn of Africa. Later, the port and its refinery handled much of Ethiopia's trade until the border war of 1998 closed that route.
An Assab map poster captures a town shaped by function: quays, piers and harbour works along the water, and a rational street layout behind them. The contrast between the fine lines of the town and the empty ground around it makes for a strong, graphic print.
The port curves along a sheltered bay, and its piers and quays reach into the water as crisp geometric shapes against the plain line of the shore.
Small islands dot the water beyond the coast, breaking up the sea surface and adding detail to the poster's broad expanse of water.
Inland, the streets simply stop at open ground. The sharp boundary between town and arid plain gives the map a stark, clear outline.
