Te mapa
Atbasar sits on the Zhabay River near where it joins the Ishim, in the northern Kazakh steppe. From above, the land around it is almost featureless: wide fields, few trees and long straight roads toward the horizon. Against that emptiness the town shows as a dense, clearly bounded patch of streets, and the looping river runs along one side.
Most of the town is laid out as a regular grid of long parallel streets, the pattern of many settlements founded on the steppe. The railway runs past it and is marked by the lines of sidings and yards. The river's curves and oxbows soften the geometry at the edges, where the grid gives way to floodplain.
An Atbasar map poster works because of this contrast. There is order in the centre, the river winds on one side and the plain stretches away on the others. Few places show so plainly how a town was set down on open land and organised around a river crossing and a railway.
The river winds past the town in soft curves and meanders. It is the only natural line in an otherwise straight-edged composition.
Long, evenly spaced streets form a regular grid. On a poster it looks almost like a textile pattern with a clean border.
The rail line and its yards cross the edge of town as bundles of parallel tracks, a reminder of how the steppe towns were connected.

For people from northern Kazakhstan, or anyone who has lived in a steppe town, this map is instantly familiar: the grid, the river, the wide space around them. It is a quiet, graphic piece that suits a minimal interior.
