Avaré lies in the interior of São Paulo state, on a plateau of low hills and farmland. From above, the centre follows a fairly regular grid of blocks, with newer neighbourhoods reaching outward along regional roads. Toward the south, the landscape opens into the long arms of the Jurumirim reservoir on the Paranapanema River.
The reservoir is a major part of local life. Its shores, a short drive from the town, are used for boating, fishing and weekend houses, and they draw visitors from across the state. Avaré itself works as a regional centre for agriculture, services and commerce.
