Avtury lies in the Shali district of Chechnya, on the plain at the foot of the Caucasus mountains, south-east of Grozny. From above, it appears as a broad settlement of long, straight streets, lined with houses and gardens, stretching across flat ground toward the foothills.
Like many villages in the region, Avtury is spread out rather than dense, with large household plots and wide spaces between the streets. A small river and irrigation channels cross the area, and farmland extends in all directions around the built-up land.
