Azeitão lies in the municipality of Setúbal, on the Setúbal peninsula south of Lisbon. It is not a single compact town but a group of villages, including Vila Nogueira de Azeitão and Vila Fresca de Azeitão, spread across farmland and vineyards. To the south, the Arrábida range rises sharply, and its protected natural park separates Azeitão from the sea.
The area is known for wine and cheese. Moscatel de Setúbal and other wines are produced here, and the historic cellars of José Maria da Fonseca stand in Vila Nogueira. Queijo de Azeitão, a soft sheep's milk cheese with protected designation of origin, carries the name of the place. The Quinta da Bacalhôa, with its Renaissance gardens and tiles, is also nearby.
