Te mapa
Baikonur was built on the Kazakh steppe to support the Baikonur Cosmodrome, from which Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin were launched. The city was called Leninsk for much of the Soviet period. It is in Kazakhstan but is administered by Russia under a long-term lease. From above, it is clearly a planned town: wide avenues, orderly residential blocks and clear zoning.
The Syr Darya forms the city's southern edge, curving through the otherwise flat, dry landscape. Its river line and green banks are the only irregular element in a mostly geometric plan. North of town, roads and railway lines run out across the steppe toward the launch complexes, which are far enough away to leave large open areas between them and the city.
A Baikonur map poster suits anyone interested in space history, or anyone who lived or worked here. The Soviet grid, the river and the long empty spaces convey the city's purpose without any imagery of rockets. Its layout tells the story on its own: a place built in the desert for a single, very ambitious job.
The river winds along the city's southern side, a single meandering line against the straight Soviet avenues and a rare trace of water in the dry steppe.
Broad avenues and regular apartment blocks follow a strict plan, so the city looks orderly and uniform in black and white.
Long, straight roads and rail lines leave the city northward toward the cosmodrome's launch complexes, crossing large stretches of empty steppe.

Koteā ko Baikonur
For space enthusiasts, engineers and former residents, this map is a quiet tribute to where human spaceflight began. It suits a study or workspace, where the plain geometry reads as history more than decoration.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example to add a launch date or write the name Leninsk. Choose one of five styles, including Blueprint, which suits the subject well. HD files cost $9, and printed posters are made by partners in over 30 countries.
