In Papiamentu, Banda Riba means the upper side and refers to the eastern part of Curaçao, beyond the capital Willemstad. The area around these coordinates lies between the eastern outskirts of the city and the south coast. From above, residential streets wind across low, dry hills, and the shoreline breaks into bays and sheltered inlets.
One of the most distinctive features of this side of the island is the Spaanse Water, a large, branching inland bay connected to the sea by a narrow channel. Its shape, with arms reaching deep into the land, is striking from the air. The eastern side also has beaches, marinas and neighbourhoods that have grown up along the coast.
A Bandariba map poster shows how the island's coastline shapes everything else. Roads follow the hills and the curves of the bays, housing clusters on the higher ground, and the sea fills the rest of the frame. In black and white, the jagged inlets and the calm water make an unusually graphic composition for a map of such a small area.

The shoreline along this side of Curaçao is broken by small bays and beaches. The coastline draws a sharp, irregular line between the land and the Caribbean Sea.
Residential roads wind across the low, dry hills east of Willemstad. They follow the terrain rather than a grid, creating soft, curving patterns between the bays.
