Te mapa
Barendrecht lies just south of Rotterdam on the island of IJsselmonde, with the Oude Maas forming its southern edge. From above it is a textbook Dutch landscape: flat polders divided by straight ditches, dikes carrying roads along the river, and residential neighbourhoods arranged in tidy blocks that follow the old field boundaries rather than any single central plan.
For much of the twentieth century the area was known for greenhouse horticulture and market gardening, and traces of that past remain in the long, narrow plots visible on the map. Since the 1990s the town has grown considerably, most visibly in Carnisselande, a newer district built with canals, ponds and curving streets on former farmland.
Transport shapes the picture as much as water does. Motorways and the freight railway known as the Betuweroute pass through the municipality, drawing strong lines across the grid of housing. A Barendrecht map poster shows how these layers sit together, river, polder, suburb and infrastructure, in a composition that feels almost like an architectural drawing.
The river forms a broad, gently curving southern boundary, lined by dikes and open land, giving the map a strong natural base line beneath the built-up area.
The newer district is threaded with canals and ponds, and its winding residential streets stand out clearly against the straighter roads of the older village core.
Several major routes run side by side through the town, including freight and high-speed rail, forming a wide corridor that splits the map into distinct neighbourhoods.

Koteā ko Barendrecht
It is a map for people who commute into Rotterdam, grew up among the greenhouses, or moved into one of the new streets and want a record of the neighbourhood. The flat geometry of polder and canal makes a calm, graphic print.
