Barra Map Poster & Print

Barra lies in the west of Bahia, where the Rio Grande flows into the São Francisco, one of Brazil's great rivers. On a map the confluence dominates everything. Two broad rivers meet near the town, their channels divided by sandbanks and islands, and a wide floodplain spreads around them. The town sits on the bank, with streets running back from the water.

River trade shaped Barra for a long time, when boats on the São Francisco carried goods and people through the interior. The town keeps a compact old centre near the river, with a regular pattern of streets beyond it. Around it, the dry landscape of the Bahian interior meets the green line of the river margins.

A Barra map poster shows a place defined by water in the middle of a dry region. In black and white, the wide channels and islands become large, flowing shapes around a small, precise grid of streets. It is a simple composition with a strong sense of place.

The confluence

The Rio Grande meets the São Francisco near the town. This junction of two large rivers is the main feature of the map.

02

Islands and sandbanks

The rivers split around sandy islands and bars. Their shapes change with the seasons and give the poster a fluid texture.

03

Riverside centre

The old part of town faces the water, with streets leading inland in a compact grid. It sits clearly against the wide river.
