Te mapa
Barreiras lies in the far west of Bahia, where the Rio Grande cuts a valley through the high plains of the cerrado. The city grew along the river. On the map, the older streets follow the banks, and a broader grid spreads across the flatter land beyond. Bridges carry the main roads over the water and join the neighbourhoods on either side.
Today Barreiras is a regional centre for one of Brazil's large agricultural frontiers, where farms on the western Bahia plateau grow soy, cotton and corn. That role shows on a Barreiras map poster in the long, straight highways that run out from the city toward farming country and other towns across the region.
Toward the edge of the urban area, the grid loosens into open lots, farm roads and stretches of cerrado vegetation. The escarpments of the plateau rise above the river valley. The result is a map with one clear axis, the river, and a city that reaches outward along its roads instead of growing in a tight circle.
The river passes through the city, and its curving course is the one natural line that organises the street plan around it.
Main roads leave Barreiras in long, straight lines, linking it with the farming districts of western Bahia and with the neighbouring states.
Beyond the valley, the land rises toward the chapadas. There the map changes from dense blocks to a sparse pattern of roads across open country.

Koteā ko Barreiras
Barreiras draws people from across Brazil to work in farming and trade, and many of them come to see it as home. A map of the city is a simple, honest record of where a family settled or where a working life began.
