Basse-Terre sits at the southwestern end of the island of the same name, one of the two main wings of Guadeloupe. The town runs in a long band along the Caribbean coast, where a narrow strip of level ground meets the sea. Behind it the land climbs quickly towards the volcanic massif of La Soufrière. On a map the streets follow the shore rather than forming a square grid.
The town is the administrative capital of Guadeloupe, even though Pointe-à-Pitre, on the other wing of the island, is the larger commercial centre. Basse-Terre is one of the oldest French settlements in the Caribbean. Fort Delgrès stands at its southern edge, its angular bastions clearly visible from above. The fort is named after Louis Delgrès, who resisted the restoration of slavery in 1802.
A Basse-Terre map poster captures a town shaped by two forces, the sea on one side and the volcano on the other. Roads climb in bends into the higher districts, and small rivers cut down to the coast. The shoreline and the rising terrain give the print a clear sense of direction, from mountain to water.
A large fortification on the southern edge of town. Its star-like angles of bastions and walls stand out sharply from the surrounding streets on the map.
The town centre stretches along the shore in a narrow strip. Main streets run parallel to the sea and short cross streets link them to the waterfront.
Behind the town, winding roads climb the slopes towards higher neighbourhoods and the La Soufrière massif. Their tight bends mark how steeply the ground rises from the coast.

Koteā ko Basse-Terre
Basse-Terre means something to people from Guadeloupe and to those who have hiked its volcano or lived on the island. A map of the town between sea and mountain says a lot about the place without needing a single photograph.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be personalised, for example with a family name, a date or a short phrase in Creole or French. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
