Te mapa
La Désirade lies just east of Grande-Terre in Guadeloupe. From above, this slender island looks like a raised table laid along the sea. A high plateau runs its full length and falls in steep slopes to the north. To the south it descends more gradually toward the coast, where the few settlements and the main road are strung out in a line.
The name goes back to Columbus. His crew sighted the island in 1493 on his second voyage, after a long Atlantic crossing, and gave it a name meaning the desired one. Geologists value it for another reason: its rocks are among the oldest in the Lesser Antilles. For more than two centuries it also housed a leper colony.
A La Désirade map poster makes a great deal of a simple form. The long axis of the island reads clearly across the sheet, and the settlements along the south coast, from Grande-Anse eastward, add a thin line of detail against open ground. The result is spare and linear, closer to a drawing than to a plan.
A raised plateau covers most of the island and is crossed by few roads. On the map it appears as an open, quiet interior bounded by slopes on all sides.
Grande-Anse, the main village, and smaller settlements to the east line the gentler south coast. They are joined by a road that runs parallel to the water.
The north side of the island faces the open Atlantic and drops steeply. It leaves an almost empty edge on the map, a clean line with little built detail.

Koteā ko La Désirade
La Désirade appeals to people who prefer the quieter corners of the Caribbean, and to those with family ties to Guadeloupe. Its long, simple shape looks deliberate on a wall. It also pairs well with maps of neighbouring islands if you are putting together a series.
