Te mapa
Marie-Galante lies south of the main islands of Guadeloupe, in the French Caribbean. Its shape is unusually regular, close to a circle, and it is often called the island of a hundred windmills, or la grande galette, the big pancake. That second nickname refers to its round outline and its largely flat, low profile, very different from the volcanic peaks nearby.
Christopher Columbus named the island in 1493 after his ship, the Maria Galante. For centuries its economy has depended on sugar cane, and the island is well known for its rum distilleries and the stone windmill towers left in the fields. Its three communes, Grand-Bourg, Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante and Saint-Louis, all sit on the coast.
A Marie-Galante map poster shows a round island with a rural network. Roads spread across the flat interior, joining the three small towns, and fields and lanes fill in the space between them. The coastline is smooth along much of its length. It is a balanced, almost geometric composition that sits well on a square or near-square wall space.

Grand-Bourg, Capesterre and Saint-Louis each form a small, compact cluster of streets on the shore. Together they give the round island three anchor points.
The flat interior is covered by a network of rural roads and lanes that crisscross the old sugar-cane country. They fill the circle with an even, open web.

Koteā ko Marie-Galante
For people with roots in Guadeloupe, and for travellers who took the ferry across, Marie-Galante means beaches, rum and a slower rhythm. Its round shape is simple and balanced, which makes the print work in many rooms and alongside other Caribbean maps.
