Baucau is the second-largest city in Timor-Leste, on the north coast east of Dili. It is built on two levels. The old town, with buildings from the Portuguese period including the old municipal market, sits in a green hollow fed by natural springs. The newer upper town spreads across a limestone plateau above it, looking out toward the sea.
On a map the two parts are joined by winding roads that climb between the levels. The upper town has a looser, more regular street layout, while the older quarter is compact and follows the ground. Nearby is the airport, whose long runway makes a straight line on the plateau, and roads lead down toward the coast and the beaches below the town.
A Baukau map poster shows this layered city in a single view. The coastline sets one edge of the composition, the plateau streets fill the centre and the curving connecting roads link it all together. It makes a meaningful print for Timorese families, for people who have worked in the country and for travellers who passed through.

The airfield's runway runs across the flat ground near the city. Its long straight line is the most geometric shape in an otherwise organic plan.
The shoreline of the Wetar Strait runs below the plateau. Roads lead down from the town toward the beaches, giving the map a clear edge of sea.

Koteā ko Baukau
Baucau stays in the memory because of its setting: the springs, the old buildings and the view from the plateau to the sea. A map of the city keeps that geography close.
