Te mapa
Bay City sits on both banks of the Saginaw River in Michigan, just a few miles upstream from where the river meets Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. From above, the river is the defining feature, running north through the city and dividing it into east and west sides.
A series of bridges, including movable bascule spans, connect the two halves. On each side, the street grid follows the river's orientation, with long commercial and residential blocks. In the nineteenth century Bay City was a major lumber town, and its historic districts still reflect that period of rapid growth.
A Bay City map poster shows a classic Great Lakes river town: the broad water channel, the bridges crossing it, the grid of downtown and old neighbourhoods, and industrial land along the banks. Further north, the shoreline of Saginaw Bay adds a final, open edge to the composition.
The river flows north through the city toward Saginaw Bay, a wide, curving band that divides the map and gives it a strong central axis.
Several bridges link the east and west sides, their short straight lines crossing the water at regular intervals and tying the two street grids together.
Downtown and older neighbourhoods follow a regular grid laid out during the lumber boom, with long avenues that read clearly on a black-and-white print.
