Te mapa
Bayan Hot is the seat of Alxa League, the westernmost division of Inner Mongolia and one of its driest. The city sits on a gently sloping plain just west of the Helan Mountains, a long, dark ridge running north to south that separates Alxa from the Yellow River valley in Ningxia. From above, the modern street grid lies on open ground, with desert stretching away to the west.
The town began as Dingyuanying, a fortified settlement of the Qing period. The residence of the Alxa Mongol princes still stands in the older part of the city, together with Yanfu Temple, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. The newer districts are broad and planned, with wide avenues and large blocks, reflecting the city's growth as the administrative centre of a vast, thinly populated league.
A Bayan Hot map poster contrasts the compact old quarter with the generous geometry of the new city and the empty land around it. The mountain front to the east and the desert to the west give the map two very different edges. In black and white, the wide streets and open spaces make a spare, graphic composition that matches the landscape.
The mountains rise east of the city as a steep, continuous ridge. On the poster you can see their presence in the way the built-up area thins out as the ground climbs toward them.
The older part of the city, around the former princely residence and Yanfu Temple, has a tighter street pattern than the planned districts around it. It marks where the settlement began.
The newer districts are laid out with broad roads and large blocks. This generous spacing gives the map an open, airy texture that reflects the scale of the desert region around it.

Koteā ko Bayan Hot
Bayan Hot means something to Mongolian and Han families of the Alxa region, to workers who spent years there, and to travellers heading into the Badain Jaran and Tengger deserts. Its map captures the sense of a city standing at the edge of very large, open country.
