This Beihai lies in the far west of Yunnan province, in the Tengchong area, a long way from the coastal city of the same name in Guangxi. The landscape here is upland country shaped by old volcanic activity, and the map reflects it: roads follow valleys and the edges of hills, and settlements gather on the flatter ground between them.
The area is associated with the Beihai wetland, a highland lake known for its floating mats of grass and reeds, and the wider Tengchong region is known for its volcanic cones and hot springs.
