Te mapa
Belas lies in the hills north-west of Lisbon, between Queluz and the Serra de Sintra. From above, its streets follow uneven ground. Old lanes curl along valley sides, newer developments fill the flatter areas, and main roads and railway lines bundle along the corridors leading to the capital. Patches of green remain on the steeper slopes.
Belas is closely linked with the Aqueduto das Águas Livres. The eighteenth-century aqueduct that brought water to Lisbon starts here, and its line crosses the surrounding countryside towards the city. The historic village centre is small and tightly knit, while modern residential areas and a golf estate spread out over the surrounding hills.
A Belas map poster shows the transition from Lisbon’s dense suburbs to a hillier, greener landscape. There are compact old streets, looping modern roads and the long engineered corridors of rail and motorway. The map gives a layered, textured portrait of a place that has supplied Lisbon with water for nearly three hundred years.
The historic aqueduct that supplied Lisbon begins in the Belas area and runs south-east towards the city. It is a well-known piece of eighteenth-century engineering.
The original core of Belas is a small cluster of narrow, curving streets. It forms the densest and most irregular part of the map.
Roads and railway lines follow the valleys towards Lisbon and Sintra. They draw strong, flowing lines through the hilly landscape.
