Te mapa
Belém is a parish in western Lisbon on the north bank of the Tagus, where the river widens toward the Atlantic. On a map, the district is arranged in bands parallel to the water: the riverside promenade and docks, a line of rail and road, a strip of gardens and monuments, and residential streets climbing the slope behind.
Belém is closely tied to Portugal's Age of Discovery. The Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém are together listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Monument to the Discoveries stands on the waterfront. The 25 de Abril Bridge crosses the Tagus a short distance to the east.
A Belém map poster emphasises these layers: the broad river, the long straight line of the waterfront and the monumental gardens in front of the monastery. In black and white, the Tagus fills much of the frame, giving the design scale and calm.
The long riverside runs along the southern edge of the district, with the wide estuary forming one of the largest and calmest shapes on the map.
The Jerónimos Monastery and the gardens in front of it form a broad open space between the river and the streets, the district's monumental centre.
The tower stands at the water's edge to the west, a small but significant mark on the shoreline that ties the map to Lisbon's maritime history.
