Bergen Map Poster & Print
Bergen is a municipality on the coast of North Holland, north of Alkmaar. Its map runs in bands from west to east: first the beach at Bergen aan Zee, then a wide belt of dunes and woodland, then the village itself on the inland edge of the dunes, and finally the flat, ditch-lined polders beyond. Few Dutch places show this coastal sequence so clearly.
In the early twentieth century, Bergen drew painters who became known as the Bergen School, and it has kept a reputation as an artists' village, with galleries and a leafy, low-rise character. The streets of the centre are informal and winding, very different from the straight lines of the reclaimed land to the east.

The small seaside settlement sits right on the straight North Sea coast. It forms a compact cluster at the western edge of the frame.
