Beslan lies on the North Ossetian plain, north of Vladikavkaz and the main range of the Caucasus. On a map it is a fairly regular grid of streets on level ground. Railway lines cross the town, and it sits at a junction on the route that has long connected the region with the rest of southern Russia.
The airport that serves Vladikavkaz is located next to the town, and its runway makes a long straight mark on the map. Beslan is also known around the world for the 2004 school siege, a tragedy that took hundreds of lives. The town's memorial to the victims remains an important place of remembrance.
