Te mapa
Bet She’an lies in the Jordan Valley in northern Israel, well below sea level, where the Harod Valley opens toward the Jordan River. Mount Gilboa rises to the west. On the map, the modern town surrounds a large archaeological area, and to the north and east the land breaks into a geometric pattern of fields and rectangular fish ponds.
The site has been inhabited for thousands of years. The tell rises above the remains of Scythopolis, a Roman and Byzantine city of the Decapolis, whose colonnaded streets, theater and bathhouses are now part of Bet She’an National Park, one of the most extensive excavations of its kind in the country.
A Bet She’an map poster places these layers side by side: the modern streets, the ancient city's outline and the geometry of the farmland. It is a subtle image of a place where very different periods of history occupy the same small area of the valley floor.
The excavated Roman-Byzantine city, with its colonnaded streets and theater, occupies a large area beside the modern town and the tell above it.
Rectangular fish ponds and fields cover the valley floor around the town, creating a precise, gridded pattern on the map.
Mount Gilboa rises to the west, while the Jordan Valley opens to the east, placing the town between steep ground and flat lowland.

Koteā ko Bet She’an
For archaeologists, travellers who have walked the Roman streets, or families who live in the valley, Bet She’an stands for continuity across many centuries. Its map makes a thoughtful, unusual choice for a wall.
