Te mapa
Bet Shemesh lies in the Shephelah, the rolling foothills between the Judean Mountains and the coastal plain. From above, the city looks like a series of separate neighbourhoods, each sitting on its own hill or ridge. Curving streets follow the contours, and valleys and open slopes run between the districts.
The modern city was founded in 1950 near the ancient site of Beth Shemesh, a biblical town whose name means "house of the sun". The archaeological mound, Tel Beit Shemesh, overlooks the Sorek Valley, the route that has long linked the hills of Jerusalem with the lowlands towards the Mediterranean.
A Bet Shemesh map poster shows a city shaped by its terrain. The older center sits in the valley, and newer districts such as Ramat Beit Shemesh spread across the southern hills in winding loops and cul-de-sacs. Forested slopes and open ground separate one area from the next.
The valley cuts through the landscape north of the city, carrying the road and railway towards Jerusalem and marking a long natural line across the map.
In the hillside neighbourhoods, streets bend with the terrain in tight arcs and loops, which makes an intricate, almost topographic pattern.
The mound of biblical Beth Shemesh sits at the valley's edge, a small open patch set against the modern city around it.

Koteā ko Bet Shemesh
Bet Shemesh has grown quickly, and many families have made it home within one generation. A map poster records that particular arrangement of hills and neighbourhoods, whether it marks a first home, the place where children grew up, or a link to the land's ancient past.
