Te mapa
The Muslim Quarter is the largest and most populous of the four quarters of Jerusalem's walled Old City, filling its north-eastern part. On a map it appears as a tightly packed mesh of alleys, covered markets and stepped lanes, bounded by the city walls to the north and east and by the Christian Quarter to the west, with the Haram al-Sharif on its south-eastern side.
Damascus Gate, the most elaborate of the Ottoman gates, leads into the quarter from the north, and two main market streets fan out from it toward the south. The Via Dolorosa, the traditional route of Jesus to the crucifixion, begins near the Lions' Gate and winds westward through the quarter's lanes. Mamluk-era buildings, madrasas and markets line many of its streets.
The Haram al-Sharif, with the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque, adjoins the quarter, and many of its gates open directly from the quarter's streets. A Muslim Quarter map poster traces this intricate fabric in fine line, showing how centuries of building have filled almost every space within the walls.
The northern gate is the quarter's main entrance, and from it two market streets branch southward, forming the principal lines within an otherwise intricate network.
The traditional processional route begins near the Lions' Gate and winds west through the quarter's narrow streets, a path that can be followed on the map from lane to lane.
The vast open platform of the Haram al-Sharif borders the quarter to the south-east, a broad empty space on the map beside the dense surrounding blocks.

Residents, families with roots in the Old City, and visitors who have walked from Damascus Gate through the markets all recognise the outline of this quarter. The map records one of the most intricate urban fabrics anywhere, with calm clarity.
