Te mapa
Bhamo lies on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River in Kachin State, northern Myanmar, not far from the border with China. The river dominates the map. Its wide channel, sandbanks and islands lie along one side of the town, and the streets run parallel to the bank before spreading inland. Water and land share the frame almost equally.
For centuries Bhamo was a trading post on routes between Burma and Yunnan. In the colonial era, it was known as the upper limit of regular steamer navigation on the Irrawaddy for much of the year. That role as a meeting point between river traffic and overland caravans shaped the long, riverfront form of the town.
A Bhamo map poster makes the relationship between town and river its subject. The Irrawaddy remains open and pale, with the braided channels drawn in outline, and the street pattern gathers along the bank. The image is spare and geographic, and it suits anyone connected to Kachin State or drawn to the great rivers of Southeast Asia.
The town faces a broad stretch of the Irrawaddy. Sandbanks and river islands make the waterfront the most distinctive part of the map.
The main streets follow the line of the bank, showing how the town grew along the river before spreading inland.
Bhamo lies close to the Chinese border and once served as a gateway for trade toward Yunnan. That history explains its size and shape.
