Te mapa
Bignona lies in the Casamance region of southern Senegal, north of Ziguinchor and the Casamance River. From above, the town forms a compact grid of streets around a central market area, with the main road running through it and the surrounding land broken into rice paddies, palm groves and patches of forest cut by tidal creeks.
The landscape of lower Casamance is shaped by water. Winding channels known locally as bolongs reach inland from the river, bordered by mangroves, and the flat ground between them is farmed intensively for rice. Bignona is the administrative centre of its department and a crossroads for routes linking Ziguinchor with the north and with The Gambia.
A Bignona map poster balances the order of the town with the fluid shapes of its setting. Straight streets meet at the centre, main roads lead out in several directions, and beyond them the creeks and field edges create curving, irregular lines. It is a map in which land and water are closely bound together.
Tidal channels lined with mangroves wind through the low ground near town, adding branching, organic lines that contrast with the built-up streets.
The centre is laid out in fairly regular blocks around the market and main road, drawn on the map as a compact, orderly core.
Roads leave Bignona toward Ziguinchor, the Gambian border and other parts of Casamance, making the town a clear junction on the regional map.
