Te mapa
Bila Tserkva lies in Kyiv Oblast, about eighty kilometres south of Kyiv, on the banks of the Ros River. The river gives the city its shape. It winds through the centre in a series of bends and small islands, with steep granite banks in places, and the older streets gather on the high ground above it. Newer districts spread outward in larger blocks.
The city traces its origins to a fortress founded in the eleventh century by Prince Yaroslav the Wise, and its name means white church. Today it is best known for Oleksandriia, a large landscape park laid out at the end of the eighteenth century for the Branicki family. The park's ponds, groves and follies lie along the Ros on the city's western side.
A Bila Tserkva map poster brings together the curving river, the central grid of the historic town, the Soviet-era residential districts and the soft outlines of the park. Because the river threads through everything, the composition feels unified and organic. In black and white its bends and islands become the natural focus of the design.
The river bends repeatedly through the city, broken by small islands and rocky banks. It forms a flowing central line that both divides and connects the neighbourhoods.
The historic landscape park on the western edge appears as a large area of paths, ponds and water features, one of the most elegant shapes on the map.
The older streets on the higher ground near the river form a compact, more regular grid, where the city's main churches and public buildings are concentrated.
