Kyiv is built on both banks of the Dnipro, one of Europe's major rivers. From above, the river is the dominant shape: wide, split by long wooded islands, and crossed by a series of bridges. The right bank rises in steep, green hills where the historic city was founded. The flatter left bank is covered by later residential districts with wide, regular streets.
On the right bank the street pattern follows the terrain. Khreshchatyk runs through a valley at the centre. Andriyivskyy Descent winds down the hill to Podil, the old merchant quarter with a tighter grid near the river. Upstream and downstream, parkland and ravines break up the built area, giving the map many irregular green gaps.
Saint Sophia's Cathedral and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, both UNESCO sites, sit on the right bank heights. Across the water, Trukhaniv Island and Hydropark form large, quiet shapes in the middle of the river. Podil lowland grid
Podil sits at the foot of the hills beside the river. Its straighter, denser streets differ clearly from the winding roads on the slopes above it.
