Te mapa
Homyel' sits on the right bank of the Sozh, and the river shapes the city's map. The historic centre rises on a high bank above the water, where the Rumyantsev-Paskevich palace and its landscaped park look out across the river to the flat, wooded floodplain on the other side. From above, the green of the park and the curve of the Sozh make the old core easy to spot.
Homyel' is the second-largest city in Belarus, and it has expanded well beyond the river. Wide Soviet-era avenues lead out to residential districts of large blocks, rail lines cross the city towards the country's southeast, and industrial zones occupy the edges. The contrast between the older street pattern near the palace and the broader, later grid is easy to see from above.
The surrounding region lies on the border of Russia and Ukraine and was among the areas most affected by the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The city itself has remained a significant regional centre. A Homyel' map poster focuses on the steady elements: the river, the bluff with its palace park, and the long streets that spread from them.
The park around the Rumyantsev-Paskevich palace stretches along the high bank, a green block with winding paths set above the curve of the Sozh.
The river wraps along the city's eastern side, its wide floodplain and oxbows forming a soft, irregular counterpoint to the street grid.
Broad straight avenues lead away from the centre to large residential districts, a scale that contrasts clearly with the older lanes near the river.
