Te mapa
Bryansk stands on the Desna River in western Russia, not far from the borders with Belarus and Ukraine, and its map is unusually fragmented. Instead of a single compact centre, the city is made up of several districts spread along the river valley, separated by ravines, wooded slopes and the wide floodplain of the Desna, and linked by long roads and bridges.
The city was first mentioned in chronicles in 1146, and its historic core sits on the high right bank, where old churches and Pokrovskaya Hill look out over the river. Across the floodplain, districts such as Bezhitsa grew around industry, especially rail engineering, with their own street grids and centres, so the city reads almost like a group of towns.
Bryansk is surrounded by large forests, which played an important part in the partisan movement during the Second World War, and much of the land around it is still wooded today. On a Bryansk map poster, the green of the valley and the gaps between districts are as important as the streets themselves, giving the city a spacious and very distinctive composition.
The river winds through a wide valley with meadows and oxbow lakes, forming a broad open band on the map between the old centre and the districts across the water.
The historic heart of Bryansk sits on this high ground above the river, where the city began, with churches and older streets gathered along the slope.
An industrial district across the river, built around engineering works, it has its own regular street grid and centre, one of several distinct urban clusters on the map.

For people from Bryansk, the map shows the city as it is actually experienced: a series of neighbourhoods joined by long rides across the river valley. It makes a thoughtful gift for someone who has moved away, or a record of a first home.
